All About Me!

The Basics

Welcome to my blog! I'm Yasmin aka Yas, this is my curated collection of reportage on different things pertaining to culture, arts, entertainment, my general opinions, and some work I've done in journalism so far. I have experience in copyediting, journalistic reporting, and writing. I'm currently an undergraduate student focusing on Journalism and Public Policy.

Why Journalism?

My interest in journalism emerged while taking an AP Research course in high school where I wrote a 20-page paper about how the media affects the perception of Black women and girls. News is one of the most long-standing forms of media in its various iterations from traditional print, radio and broadcast. It historically has had long-standing implications in how we view marginalized groups of people, oftentimes to perpetuate stereotypes and dehumanize those groups. This is particularly dangerous because those perceptions often stay in people's heads even if it's on a subconscious level which makes it easier then to ignore when those people are suffering and as a person who is a part of several marginalized groups whether it be as a child of immigrants, a black person, a woman I understand the importance of making sure other marginalized voices are heard, understood and humanized.

Apart from that I'm also often drawn to subjects such as art and entertainment because of my love of different genres and storytelling as a whole. This blog will be an amalgamation of my interests and the work I produce as a journalist.
